    John E. Wear Jr.

    Dr. John E. Wear Jr., the Catawba College Center for the Environment’s founding director, established the Center and Catawba’s Environmental Science & Environmental Studies Program in 1993.

    Dr. Wear has committed his energies to environmental initiatives at the local, regional and state level. His leadership was instrumental in launching a number of sustainability initiatives in the state relating to air and water quality and land conservation.

    He was involved in the creation of the South Yadkin Wildlife Refuge and was responsible for design oversight in the creation of the Center for the Environment facility, one of the first “green” buildings in the Southeast. He has served on a number of state and regional boards and commissions and was the past president of the LandTrust for Central North Carolina.

    Dr. Wear was named the 2003 N.C. Conservationist of the Year by the Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards Program; a 2002 “Guardian of the Earth” by The Charlotte Observer; and the 2001 Recycler of the Year by the Carolina Recycling Association (the nation’s largest recycling organization).




    Amanda Hooker

    Amanda Hooker, a 2007 graduate of Catawba College's Environmental Science Program, has joined the Center for the Environment as the project development assistant. Her areas of responsibility include further development of the Friends of the Center and work with the various educational and outreach programs the Center offers. She worked with the Center throughout her college years, conducting research and working with Catawba administrators on energy-saving projects through the Campus Greening Initiative. She lives on a farm in Yadkin County with her husband and four-year-old daughter, Sophie.



    Juanita Teschner

    Juanita Bouser Teschner serves as senior writer and researcher for the Center for the Environment. She writes and disseminates information on the various environmental initiatives of the Center; serves as the editor and primary writer of the Center’s newsletters and online magazine; and assists with brochures and grant proposals.
    A graduate of Southwest Missouri State University, Ms. Teschner has worked for Catawba since 1985 and exclusively for the Center since 2001. She has written news and feature stories on the environment and sustainability for more than a decade.




    Kurt Cribb

    Kurt Cribb serves as the Center’s special projects coordinator. In that capacity, he supervises the daily operations and maintenance of the Center facility and surrounding landscape; supervises contractors, volunteers and students during work projects around the building and on the wildlife refuge and ecological preserve; and serves as a liaison with community and environmental organizations that hold meetings and workshops in the building. He has responsibility for the daily care of nearly 800 acres of wildlife habitat.
    Mr. Cribb is a graduate of Catawba College. He has worked for his alma mater since 1998 and for the Center since 2000.
