    WEBCAST ON GLOBAL WARMING SOLUTIONS
    January 30, 2008

    The Center for the Environment at Catawba College will offer a live, interactive webcast called “The 2 Percent Solution” at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, in Room 300 of the Center for the Environment facility. The discussion will revolve around the question: “Can we as a nation get onto the path of cutting global warming pollution 2 percent a year for the next decade? If so, what would it take?”

    FAITH AND ENVIRONMENT FORUM/CONFERENCE
    May 29-31, 2008

    The Faith and Environment Forum and Conference will convene faith and environmental leaders for the exploration of environmental issues and the scriptural mandate to care for God’s creation; bring together people of diverse faiths and spiritual perspectives to promote dialogue and strategies to address the environmental challenges we face; and inspire participants to assume leadership roles in their communities and churches/temples in developing innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

    Third International Hydrail Conference Held at Center for the Environment
    States will share details of their projects during the two-day conference on August 13-14. The keynote speaker at the conference dinner on Monday evening, August 13, will be Bill Ross, North Carolina's Secretary of the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources. Tickets will be available to the general public.

    Center for Environment Outing
    Join us March 22 for a presentation on global warming by Tim Flannery, the internationally acclaimed scientist, explorer, and conservationist. A bus will leave the Center for the Environment building on the Catawba campus at 6 p.m. for the 7:30 lecture and book signing at Davidson College.
     
    As the annual Henry Louis Smith Lecturer, Flannery will argue that the evidence for warming trends are compelling, discuss the effects of warming on the planet, and lay out his plan for halting further warming.
    Flannery, the author of The Weather Makers: The History and Future Impact of Climate Change, was recently named 2007 Australian of the Year by the Australian Prime Minister. He has published more than a hundred peer-reviewed papers, written definitive ecological histories of Australia and North America, and named more than thirty new species of mammals as a field zoologist.

    Join Us for One or All of Our Volunteer Days
    Join us for the Center for the Environment’s Volunteer Days. Alumni, friends and nature enthusiasts will gather at the Center at 9 a.m. on March 17, April 14 and May 19 to work on the 189-acre ecological preserve or the natural landscaping around the Center building. A light lunch will be served at noon after each work session.

    N.C. Summit on Energy Efficiency
    The North Carolina Summit on Energy Efficiency will be held April 16 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Raleigh.
    Participants will learn about and discuss opportunities for economic energy efficiency in the state and share information on the key challenges to increased energy efficiency and consumer awareness.

    Earth Day 2007 Celebration
    Earth Day 2007 festivities, sponsored by Downtown Salisbury and the Center for the Environment at Catawba College, will begin Friday evening, April 20, with Earth Night Out in Downtown Salisbury. It features fun events for the entire family.
      
    The movie “Kilowatt Ours” will be shown on both Friday and Saturday, April 21. The film follows the production of electricity from coal mining through citizens’ personal use, developing a link between the impact of electrical production on the environment and the public’s responsibility in that production.
       
    On Saturday morning, the Center for the Environment will hold workshops at the Center facility on “Loving Nature, Protecting Nature.” All events are free and open to the public. For more information, call 704.637.4727.
